4 commentsBeing Chinese
Ioly and I were talking about this Aussie angmoh who could speak Mandarin.
I said, "I can't speak Mandarin in front of him because he would understand."
She said, "Yeah cos he speaks better than you? HAHAHA."
No. Not at all offended. *GAWDEMMIT OF COURSE I AM.*
I think she has never heard me speak Mandarin before. Just because he sounds more China doesn't make him a better speaker. Just because my Mandarin is mixed with Malay and English doesn't make me less of a good Mandarin speaker.
*
In my first year during Intro to Chinese Society and Culture (my elective), the lecturer (who is ang moh) asked me a question regarding chinese during lecture.
I stared at him, and I was like, "That's a very good question."
Matthew, who sat next to me, who's angmoh, answered it instead. MALU CAN.
I stared at Matt and was like, "How do you know that?"
He said he doesn't sleep during the videos in lectures. Which led him to continuously nudge me when I sleep. Seriously so boring listening to Mao bla bla talking bout whatever he was talking about okay.
*
Anyways my point is, so many ang mohs are learning the chinese culture and the chinese language, yet so many chinese are shying away from their identities. Which in my humble opinion, is very stupid.
SO many chinese are proud of the fact that they can't speak Mandarin, read/write Chinese. How come none of them are proud of the fact that they can't speak English? IF you're going to say English is an international language, just go to a European country and see if anyone speaks that to you.
Oh oh! Something funny to share. One time, in Primary 3 or 4, I corrected a friend. She pronounced "honest" as "ho-nest". I told her, without laughing at her, that the correct way is "o-nest", "h" is silent. She didn't believe me. She then said the word in front of the whole class and everyone bwahahaha laughed at her. Okay, irrelevant.
Some Chinese treat the label "banana" as a compliment, yet they don't realise how insulting it is to be called that. Why do they think listening to chinese songs is uncool? That speaking Mandarin is of no class?
Of course I'm not saying to be extreme and only listen to chinese songs, only speak Mandarin because you're Chinese. I'm just pointing out that you don't have to be ashamed of your race.
So please just stop being so lame and get a life. Listen to some chinese songs once in a while, speak Mandarin to your fellow chinese, IT WON'T KILL YOU.
This post is not meant to offend anyone, although it may come off that way. If you want to get offended, be my guest I don't care because if you are that means I just very truthfully described who you really are - A LOSER.

He speaks Foochow, Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew, Hakka, Hainan, PLUS Mandarin, English and Malay!!! And i suspect he knows more than just that... There could be a little Tamil and who knows wat else in him somewhere.
And wat dialect do i know???
Nothing. Tiada. Mei you. Nada. Nichts!!
Compared to him, gosh... i'm such a disappointment!!! This is a tragedy...
I'm a Foochow [Fuzhou is the capital and the largest prefecture-level city of Fujian (福建) province in China. It is also referred to as Rongcheng (榕城) which means "city of banyan trees"] but i don't even know my own dialect! How terribly embarrassing is that? None of my bro n sis knows it. And among my multitudinous cousins (my dad has 14 siblings! Don't ask me what's my grandpa's secret... Anyway, i lost count of how many cousins i actually have...) only 2 i think can speak fluent Foochow. So, can u imagine what's gonna happen to the next generation??!!! None of us (except that 2 freakish cousins of mine) will be able to teach our offspring what i think is the hardest dialect among the many dialects. The Foochow dialect is going to extinct!!!
I'm thinkin, 20 years down the road from now, when my children (if i'm blessed enough) get bloody annoyingly inquisitive and asks me "What is your dialect mum? Can you say something in it??" I shall be well prepared by then and shall just reply blankly "Oh, my dear, it's a dialect which sounds like singing while quarreling (seriously!) that i myself don't know how to speak. Maybe you should ask your grandpa." Hopefully, my dad will still be alive then, to prove to my child that Foochow is never an easy language to master and that it's not my fault that i can't pass it down to them. hahaha... =P
Now that i'm staying most of the time in Penang, i shall try my best to learn Hokkien! Cos i think Hokkien is kinda easy? =D This is my aim before i graduate. hahaha... After that, i shall spend an eternity mastering Foochow. But chances of me speaking fluent Foochow in the near future is like asking a dog to bite its tail - IMPOSSIBLE...
Well, i believe everything is possible if you put your heart to it. Oh ya... XiaoHui is also Foochow!! hahaha.. I shall beg her to be my shifu and teach me proper Foochow nex sem! hehehehe....
Till the day i speak Foochow, i shall just stick to learning how to read and write Mandarin. Sigh.. what kind of Chinese am i? Definitely... the highest quality BANANA.

Well, i've been home for 22 days now (omg! tht's already almost a month!!!) and for the past few days, i've been having the time of my life! Life was a simple routine... eating like a pig, sleeping like a pig, watching tv like a pig, n surfing the net while chatting like a pig... i swear that by the end of this hols, i would evolve into a full fledge pig lookin sumthing like this...

Apart from being a porker most of the time, i also managed to catch up with many many long lost friends. Chailyn, MingEng, Nor, YuHooi, Hweeli, Choo, Michelle, CK, Jinli, Carissa (she's gonna live long i tell u. she always appear out of nowhere the moment we mention her name! oh, and always with her bf - our photographer hehe) are among the ppl whom i've met so far. Not only did i meet up with frens, i also went back to my old school(s) to see teachers n observe how much has change after we left. Well, in just 4 years, A LOT has evolved while some things remain the same... like the fact tht everyone in sigs will forever be "cold". Seeing familiar faces was truly an amazing sensation. It's just so different compared to the feeling around frens in uni. I guess its all in the chemistry - long years of chemical reactions have strengthen the bonds. haha...
However, the best thing during this hols, has definitely got to be savouring real food. wahahaha! ^o^ Laksa, mee rebus, chicken rice, chee cheong fun, homecook food! mm..mmm...mmmm.... smacking good delicious!! No matter wat everyone and all the idiotic food guides in the world say about how "glorious" Penang food is, i still think from the bottom of my gut, that JB food RULES and Penang food is mere peanuts compared to it! (okok... only the chendol on Pg Rd is wonderful - but i'm now on a search to hunt for JB's best chendol! Anyone who knows one, pls let me know ya? I don't believe there isn't any decent chendol shop in JB! hmmph...)
How to survive a holiday without working?
In order to cover all the holiday splurging, expenses incurred before and will incur after the hols, one must work. Besides, life of a pig can be too mundane at times. hehehe... Hence, i've been working my dead skin-cells off to earn some extra dosh. Can't say i've worked my ass off, cos.. imagine how tough can my work be, if i can chat on msn during working hours? =P and i don think me blessed big fat ass is slimming down!
To sum it up, my holidays so far has been fruitful. And with each passing hour, the dreadful thought of returning to the Pearl of the Orient on [18 Jun] looms larger. Sigh...
*p.s: How many Pearl of the Orients do we have on earth? Hong Kong, Philippines & Penang are ALL Pearls. So which is the true original pearl???

China cow and her two normal friends were coming down. Her two friends think that she's bossy too and I'm actually friends with them; but they still put up with her for what, I don't know and I don't give a shit.
Anyways, I just woke up and was walking head down.
She walked in front of them and then she walked STRAIGHT INTO ME.
On purpose.
Then I was damn pissed at her childishness I just stepped away and walked up. She turned to her two friends and said, "No response."
WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE TO BULLY ME?!
Someone needs to pull that stick out of her ass one day.

3 commentsLil' Bo Beep
While I was waiting for the bus after class, this lady who initially was sitting on the bench across me, came over, and sat next to me.
She must've been watching me since before, and I can't see her eyes cos she was wearing sunglasses.
Neways she had on this lil' bo beep hat which I thought was kinda cute, if we were at a costume party.
She sat next to me, and smiled at me. I turned to face her and smiled. Then, I continued to stare down the road waiting for the bus.
I sensed she was still staring and I turned to look at her and yes she still was and smilling. You know how sometimes you smile at a person and look away and when you look back they're still staring and you smile again and this could go on forever? Yes.
So she introduced herself. Strange huh. I would never go up to a stranger who's not hot and start smiling and talking.
I was thinking, omg, is she going to what, pull a sheep out of her hat now? Since you know, and old man has pullled a bunny out of a hat before, I wouldn't be surprised if she does.
Anyways she's from the Phillipines and she talked on and on and then the bus came and I excused myself and ran. Lol.
Do I have a sign across my head that says 'CHAT HERE?'

Last night, I abandoned all my notes to celebrate Yen Yeng's 21st birthday by the beach in Tanjung Bungah!
Jelina, BoonSin n I had walked out to buy KFC takeaways earlier in the evening cos it was Tuesday n those with the KFC card can get 30% off their meals. Had plans to enjoy my KFC Snack Plate then go to the Foyer at 9pm to meet a friend for discussion and surf the internet there.
So there I was in my room happily eating my whipped potato after finishing the coleslaw n bun. Excitingly waiting for the moment I stain my hands with the fatty oil from my Hot & Spicy chicken. Ooh.. Savouring every scoop of my whipped potato while eyeing my hard-to-resist chicken in the box. Last scoop left! *Heart beating faster*… Slowly putting the container while licking my lips… Hands reaching out to the poor deep fried chicken…
Telephone rings!
Aargh…
Me: Hello?!
YP: Hey, you going to Yen Yeng's birthday celebration rite?
Me: WHAT??!! Her birthday today?? NOW celebrate? What are you talking about?
BC: Hey darling, today is Yen Yeng's bday lah… we're now on the way from Queensbay to pick you up.
Me: WHHAATTT???!!! NOW? NOOWW??!!
I have a discussion later with my fren. And I just bought KFC!!! I wanna eat it!"
BC: Aiyah.. Who's tht? Meet for what? Tell tht fella tmr la…
Me: BUT BUT I have my KFC!
BC: It's okay.. Pls come la… you can bring your chicken and everything with you! Don worry bout the presents, we included you in everything.
Me: Erm.. (Lost for words) Where are you going???
BC: We're going to the beach.. Yen Yeng will be coming to fetch you.. Get ready k?
Me: Oh man… now then only you tell… Ok ok… Bye!
My appetite went from roaring to dying…
Fren's come first… Anyway the thought of escaping my room was more tempting! Packed the chicken, threw on decent clothes n off I went.
We went to the beach behind Crown Prince Hotel and Paradise Hotel. The place was great cos there was a sort of open lounge at the back of the Paradise Hotel by the beach and we sat directly outside tht lounge.. So, there was great music and atmosphere throughout the nite. The weather was also fantastic.. It was the time in Penang where it'll look like it's goin to rain but won’t till who knows when. Lightning flashes once in a while here n there… that's all. The sea breeze was damn refreshing too!
BC who shall be known as "The Chef" had cooked our picnic dinner all by herself since 3pm. There was superb salad, scrumptious spaghetti, fabulous fried rice, handmade chicken meat balls, nuggets and the stuff. Birthday gal brought sushi along too! For a moment, my KFC was forgotten. Anyway, my KFC was made as a bet to the winner who guessed correctly who the mysterious person in BC's car was. Turns out, the other person who din add up was our fren's roommate and YS won. There goes my KFC….
All 11 of us had fun. Even though we had more fun than the bday gal bcos we get to tease her. who got smashed by the tiramisu cake while picking out the blown candles with her mouth and forced to kiss her bf on the lips while we took many "failed" pics of them. Haha..
Ok.. I started writing this blog with nothing in mind. Now I've gone too far off track.. Back to my topic today… While at the beach party last nite, someone asked me which school I came from. And when I replied Convent JB, tht fella answered "Oh Convent, no wonder your command of English is good. My sisters were also from Convent and they all had weird slang like you. Convent girls all have this weird English slang." (can't quite remember wat was said but it meant something like tht la..)
I dropped dead at the last sentence.
"Weird??" How weird is it? And wat do you mean by weird?
To all my Convent friends out there. Has anyone ever told you your english was weird?
I'd say he's the weird one.
But surprisingly, I felt a strong feeling of pride that I was a Convent gal last nite. Though he said our English was weird, who cares? I'm only interested in the part when he said our command of English was good. Seriously, compared to other schools, no offense, but I must say that overall, Convent gals' English is pretty damn good (in M'sian standards). Be it from the first or last class, our English will definitely beat those from say..SETA? If I weren't in Convent from P1-F5, I don think I would be typing this blog in English rite now. It could be jolly well be in 华文。
Furthermore, the Convent culture is something very unique that can't be found anywhere. Don’t you think so? There's something special in the way students and teachers interact (I know Grumpy is going to be fuming mad while reading this blog.. Just bear with me =D) It’s a school where everyone knows everyone. No one is left out. Maybe because my school was small, but I like it that way. You will never feel alienated in Convent.
Hence, I am PROUD to say that I am a Convent gal.
Once a Convent gal, always a Convent gal!
The school song rings true…
"Though far we roam from our ancient home,
Our thoughts will often stray,
Back to these happy Convent days,
Where our hearts are warm and gay..."
The Game of Life
2:19 PM
It's the end of the semester and everyone is all stressed about the coming finals. Though the finals is just 13 days more to go as I type this, there's still a bunch of ppl getting hyped about all the wrong things.. Eg: busy trying to find a house to move in next sem.
All this moving business started since Jan and till now it hasn't finalised. And the root of the problem? The uni's attractive offer of hostels had cause a major low demand of rooms by the students. Hence, many are forced to move into the many apartments out there. So few choices, too many considerations. In the end, it all boils down to one ultimate question:
To move or not to move?
Or is it really that simple?
- The housemates.
You'll be living under one roof with this other group of 6-7 or more people for a year or two. So no matter what, try your best to find the perfect one whom you like and likes you back just as well. A one sided relationship ain't gonna work. Trust me. This process is crucial for later. - The house
The house you'll be living in for a year. The house you'll sleep, work, play etc etc etc in for the next year is the reason you wanna move out. It has to be better than the hostel (or else why move?) and if possible, better than your own home. Somehow, you'll have to find the perfect one that suits each and everyone of your housemates' needs. It’s easy as ABC... - The room
Once you've found the ideal house, then comes the stage of deciding who gets which room. Do you like sharing your space? How much space you'd share? Would you want a small room all for yourself or a big one to share with everyone else? Or if you’re desperate, a small room to share with 1 or more. Not forgetting, would you like a personal bath room too? - The rent
You've obtained the rights to your favourite room, time to sit down and talk business. How do you divide the house rent? How much does one pay for the space he lives in? Should the ppl in the big shared room + attached bathroom pay more? Or the selfish fellow who has the whole small room to himself? OR be generous and split the rent equally! As the saying goes, money is the root of all evil. Or rather, the lack of money is the root of all evil. When you talk money with students like us who depend on the never-enough gov loan, the ugly side comes out like mushrooms after rain.
CAUTION:
It will be like treading on a mine field at this point. One wrong step and you could just blow the whole relocation up! If you have made the right choice in Step1, you could just breeze thru this process. Or else, there's nothing much you can do but to give in at some point whether you like it or not, that is IF you are seriously bent on moving out. Otherwise, just end the game now and accept the hostel offer to save you the trouble.
Failure at this point however, means you'll have to restart all over from Step1. - The Devil's Deal
Congrats! You managed to stay in the game. Proceed on to the next vital step... Placing your John Hancock on the contract. And do it fast. The longer you delay, the more susceptible this game is to end terribly. After making the deal, all you have to do now, is wait for the right time n move your junk into your newly rented house! There will be another game (The Sims) waiting to be played once you've moved in. Good Luck!!!
Note: If your game ends abruptly before the deal is officially made, it ends. No returning to Step1, unless you obtained the Fast Forward card to complete all the steps above in 13 days.
..o0o..
That was what happened to my game. It ended when we're about to sign the contract. Aargh!!! Two idiots backed out and ruined all our plans. Had problems finding the right ppl to take their place. The rooms had to be reassigned. I had to move from the smallest to the biggest! Almost 22% rent hike! Can't afford it so I backed out. Sigh… Dashed are my hopes to enjoy unlimited internet, polish my cooking skills, experience living freely outside campus with all the apartment facilities etc etc etc… Sad sad...
But now that I've set my mind to stay in the campus next sem, I'm relieve I don't have to worry bout moving and all. On the other hand, when I think about the fantabulous internet connection in my room and the countless bottles of filtered water I have to buy from the café, I have a desperate urge to play the game all over again! Hehehe… ^o^
